Club career

Career start

Danny started playing football at the age of 9 at the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy. He was the captain of the youth team, and from the age of 16 he began to play for the reserve team, despite the fact that he received a serious shoulder injury in his debut match. He was one of the seven graduates of the Academy who signed professional contracts at the end of the 2008/2009 season.

On September 17, 2009, on a monthly rental basis, he moved to the League One club, Colchester United [1] . September 19, made his professional debut in a home match against Hartlepool United (2-0) and was voted “Best Player of the Match”. After 5 games held, Butt's lease was extended until the end of the season. On February 20, 2010, he scored his first goal at the adult level, bringing his team victory in the match against Oldham Athletic (1: 0) [2] .

On August 24, 2010, Danny made his Wolverhampton debut in the 2nd round match of the League Cup against Southend United (2: 1) [3] . On November 25, 2010, on a monthly rental basis, she joined Sheffield United [4] , but played only 1 game in the Championship and was recalled by Wolverhampton back. He was among the substitutes in several matches of the Premier League , but did not enter the field.

Sheffield Wensday Rentals

March 16, 2011 on loan until the end of the season moved to the club of League One Sheffield Wensday [5] . He made his debut on March 19 in a guest match against Southampton (0: 2), and took part in 10 meetings.

Butt left a good impression with the coaching staff of the “owls” and on July 26, 2011, Wensday was again rented for a period until January 2012 [6] . In December, the rental was extended until the end of the 2011/2012 season [7] . On December 31, the defender scored the first goal in the “owls”, distinguishing himself in a duel against Preston North End (2-0). In total, according to the results of the season, he played 49 matches, scoring 2 goals, and helped Wensday finish in 2nd place and get a direct ticket to the Championship.

Return to Wolverhampton

Butt began the 2012/2013 season with Wolverhampton after Dave Jones refused to sign Sheffield Wensday's new coach. On August 30, he scored the first goal for the “wolves” in the League Cup match against Northampton Town (3: 1), and on September 29 for the first time in four seasons he played for Wolves in the league - just in a duel against Sheffield Wensday (1: 0). On February 9, 2013, the defender scored a debut goal in the Championship, bringing his team a draw in a home game against Leeds United (2: 2) [8] .

Despite the departure of the “wolves” to League One at the end of the season, the club management extended the contract with Butt for 1 year, and the new manager Kenny Jackett appointed Danny the team's vice-captain. As a result, he played all 46 games in the championship and helped Wolverhampton win the promotion to the Championship for 4 rounds to the end. Also, in January 2014, the defender signed a new long-term agreement with the club until the summer of 2017 [9] .

The 2014/15 season was the first full-time for Butt at the Championship level, and he continued to demonstrate a high level of play. “Wolves” until the last round fought for getting into the playoffs , finishing in 7th place, and also recorded a record 15 dry matches. However, the successful season was spoiled by an injury - on April 23, 2015, the defender received a stressful leg fracture and was out of action for 3 months [10] . September 22, 2016 Butt extended the contract with the club for another 4 years [11] .

In the 2017/18 season, Butt lost his place in the main squad, having played only 16 matches and scoring 1 goal, but contributed to the victory of Wolves in the championship and access to the Premier League.

Rentals at Middlesbrough

August 31, 2018 on loan until the end of the season moved to Middlesbrough [12] . He made his debut as a member of the Rivermen on September 25 in the match of the 3rd round of the League Cup against Preston North End (2: 2) [13] .

On January 29, 2019, Stoke City bought the defender's transfer from Wolverhampton and the lease was prematurely terminated [14] .

International Career

The footballer’s father is from India . In 2017, Danny announced his desire to play for the Indian national team and met with the head coach of the team Stephen Konstantin. However, he never managed to become a player in the national team due to the difficulties of obtaining Indian citizenship [15] .
