The picture is a bust portrait of Major-General Vasily Dmitrievich Ilovaisky from the composition of the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Ilovaisky commanded a Don Cossack regiment named after himself, was in the flying unit of F. F. Wintzingerode, and in mid-September was promoted to major general for military distinctions. One of the first to enter the left of the French by Moscow and then participated in the pursuit of the remnants of the Great Army from Maloyaroslavets to Neman . During the foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814, he participated in the battles in Silesia and Saxony , and then in France [2] .

Depicted in a Cossack general's uniform, introduced in 1814. On the left, a Star of the Order of St. Anne , 1st Class; on the neck are crosses of the orders of St. George of the 3rd class and St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the side of the uniform, crosses of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle , 2nd degree, the Austrian Order of Leopold , 2nd degree, and Prussian Pur le Memer ; on the right, a silver medal “In commemoration of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a gold cross “For the capture of Bazardzhik” and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir, 2nd degree. From the back of the picture there is an inscription: Ilaivoisky 12ne [3] . Signed on the frame: V.D. Ilovayskiy 12th, General Mayor .

On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Committee for Certification Ilovaisky was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on May 20, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered to write a portrait of Ilovaisky for the Military Gallery. The Dow fee was paid on May 19, 1826, and January 15, 1828. The finished portrait entered the Hermitage on January 21, 1828. The previous delivery of the finished portraits was July 8, 1827, respectively, the picture dates between these numbers [4] .

In the 1840s, a lithograph was made in the workshop of K. Kraj in a drawing from a portrait, published in the book "Emperor Alexander I and his Companions" and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
