Biography
He was born in the family of a famous writer and book publisher. In the years 1919-1920 he fought for the independence of Latvia . After demobilization, he was preparing for study, from 1923 to 1927 - a student of the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Latvia. Apprentice Robert Wipper .
In 1931 he received a scholarship from the University of Latvia for two-year studies at the University of Paris . He specialized in the work, topics, methodology and sources of Western European, especially French, historians. Returning to Riga in 1933, he defended his doctoral dissertation in history.
In 1936, M. Stepermanis was appointed deputy director of the Latvian History Institute for Research.
After the Second World War, he worked at the Institute of History and Material Culture of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR as deputy director for scientific work (1946-1949), later in 1949 he headed the sector, and at the same time was an assistant professor at the Faculty of History of the University of Latvia.
In 1960 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the history of science “Farm riots in Vidzeme 1750-1784”, in 1961 he became head of the Department of History of the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Latvia and professor.
He died on December 21, 1968 in Riga, was buried in Rainis cemetery .
