Biography
Dick Lyon was born on September 7, 1939 in the city of San Fernando , California .
He was engaged in rowing while studying at Stanford University , was a member of the local rowing team, and repeatedly participated in various student regattas. He graduated from the university in 1961 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He later trained at the Lake Washington Rowing Club in Seattle .
The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1964 season, when he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Tokyo Summer Olympics . In the program of oar steeringless fours he came to the finish line third behind the crews from Denmark and Great Britain - thereby he won the bronze Olympic medal.
After the Tokyo Olympics, Lyon remained part of the US rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1966, in the steering wheelless fours, he performed in the standings of the American national championship, started at the World Championships in Bled .
Being among the leaders of the American national team, I successfully passed the selection for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich - this time I could not get into the number of winners, paired with Larry Hough in wheelless deuces he managed to qualify only in the consolation final B and was located in the final protocol of the competition on the ninth line. Soon after the Olympics, he decided to end his sports career.
Subsequently, he worked as a mechanical engineer, was engaged in the design of simulators for rowing indoors.
