Description
About the hotel window , Hopper himself wrote: “There is nothing accurate in this, only improvisation. This is not a special hotel lobby, but I have walked many times along Thirtieth Street from Broadway to Fifth Avenue, and there are a lot of crappy hotels. This is probably what inspired the plot. Loneliness? Yes, I think that [turned out] more lonely than I had planned. "
The hotel window is a classic example of Hopper’s study of isolation in American urban life in the 20th century. The painting depicts an elegantly dressed elderly woman sitting on a dark blue sofa in the nameless lobby of the hotel. He absently looks at the darkened window. All work expresses loneliness and alienation.
November 29, 2006, the painting was sold at Sotheby's for $ 26.7 million, thereby setting, at that time, a record price for Hopper's paintings.
