Biography

Almost no information has been preserved about Jacob's childhood and worldly life, and the subsequent biographical data about him are very scarce and fragmentary. It is known that he was a monk of the Konevsky Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery , where he met Feofil Omuchsky , who was soon elected hegumen [3] .

Burdened by the too noisy life of the Konevsky Monastery, Theophilus and Jacob sought silence and solitude among the mosses, mountains and swamps, on the banks of the Omuchi River, where since 1396 they had been living in strict fasting, constant prayer and in the fight against thoughts and attacks of crafty spirits [4 ] . However, here the feats of the hermits soon became widely known in the district and attracted zealots of piety, who, together with the reverends among the wilderness, founded on the Omuche River (approximately 60-70 kilometers from the city of Porkhov ) the Omuchsky desert of the Assumption of the Virgin , named after Feofilova [5] [ 6] .

Hieromonk Nicodemus (Kononov) in his theological work under the title: β€œ Russian saints and ascetics of piety, laboring and honored within the boundaries of the St. Petersburg diocese of the XIV-XVII centuries. Hagiological essays ”published in St. Petersburg in 1901, the following words of the archbishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Filaret were given:

β€œThe Monk Theophilus and Jacob founded deserts in 1396 in honor of the Assumption of Our Lady on the Omuga River, in the district of Demyanovsky Pogost, 65 miles from Porkhov. Theophilus was the founder of the desert, and Jacob - the organizer of the monastery ” [7] .

Jacob died almost simultaneously with Theophilus around 1412. His relics were buried under the stopud of the wooden Assumption Church [6] .

The memory of Jacob Omuchsky is celebrated on October 21 with the Cathedral of St. Petersburg Saints and the Cathedral of Novgorod Saints (on the third week (Sunday) at Pentecost ) [6] [8] .
