Summit Progress

The venue of the forum was the international exhibition complex INTEX Osaka on the artificial island of Sakishima in the Gulf of Osaka. About 7 thousand media representatives were accredited to the summit.

The presidents of Russia and the United States held their first full-length negotiations for the year (Trump canceled the scheduled negotiations on the sidelines of the last G20 summit in December 2018 a day before the meeting in connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait ). The conversation lasted 1 hour 20 minutes. Both sides expressed a mood to improve the quality of relations and restore communication channels. It was agreed to resume the dialogue on strategic stability, to consider the possibility of giving additional impulses to bilateral economic cooperation. Putin invited Trump to Moscow to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory on May 9, 2020. [3] The parties agreed that improving relations between the USA and the Russian Federation is in the interests of both countries and the world; discussed issues related to Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Ukraine, North Korea. Trump said that China should participate in the discussion of a modern model of an arms control system [4] .

Vladimir Putin met with British Prime Minister Theresa May at her request. The Skripals poisoning incident in Salisbury, the conflict in Ukraine, the Iranian nuclear deal and the situation in Syria were discussed. May said that normalization of relations between the UK and Russia is not yet possible.

Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron agreed to continue work on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict in the Norman format .

Xi Jinping and Donald Trump agreed to resume trade negotiations and not introduce new duties. It became known that China plans to expand imports of agricultural products from the United States. Trump also noted that he would allow Chinese company Huawei to acquire US products.

The US president announced his desire to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the demilitarized zone on the border of two Koreas during a visit to South Korea immediately after the summit. Trump and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud during the meeting condemned "increased aggression from Iran" and expressed their commitment to maintaining a sustainable international oil market. Trump believes that so far failed to establish the guilt of the crown prince in the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Russia and Saudi Arabia advocated the extension of the OPEC + deal to limit oil production for a period of 6 or 9 months [5] .

Summary

The joint communiqué circulated following a two-day meeting in Osaka states the following [6] :

The leaders of the G20 countries emphasized the need for joint action to resolve the problem of mass migration, called for unhindered energy supplies of all types of energy resources along all routes to ensure global energy security. The summit reaffirmed the right of each country to independently determine its own path to clean energy and the set of energy sources that they will use. The importance of new technologies in this process was emphasized, including the use of hydrogen as fuel, as well as the creation of carbon capture and storage systems for its subsequent processing in order to clean emissions of traditional hydrocarbon energy. The summit also expressed concern about the security of energy supplies “in the light of recent events”, without specifying whether it was an attack on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz or attempts by individual EU and US countries to slow down the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

Disagreements between the US and other G20 members on climate issues are reflected in the text of the joint communiqué. The United States reaffirmed its decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement because it is at the expense of American workers and taxpayers. As a result, the positions of the United States and other members of the G20 are recorded at various points in the declaration. The rest of the G20 members have committed to an international climate deal.

The G20 countries have committed themselves to promoting women's equal rights and reducing gender differences in employment, education and entrepreneurship.

Countries expect tourism to continue to be a critical factor in global economic growth. The leaders of the G20 countries agreed to completely stop the release of plastic into the oceans by 2050.

Countries agreed on the need to tighten measures to counter terrorism and the spread of violence on the Internet. The initiative was put forward by Australia after an attack on Christchurch mosques in March 2019. [7]
