Merida's story
The first time Merida was founded illegally in 1558 by the Spaniard Juan Rodriguez Suárez, who called him Santiago de Los Caballeros de Merida. Due to the lack of permission of the Spanish crown for the construction of the city, Suarez was arrested and sent to Bogotá . On the eve of the death sentence, the Spaniard disappeared and fled to Trujillo (Venezuela), where he received political asylum. The second founder of Merida, Juan de Maldonado, had the necessary permission.
Surrounded by mountains, Merida has long been a provincial town. Over the course of several centuries, only a few significant events happened: a strong earthquake of the year 1820 and a two-time visit of Simon Bolivar on the way to Colombia and on his return to Caracas .
