The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Pyotr Petrovich Zagryazhsky from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Zagryazhsky was the chief of the Nizhyn Dragoon Regiment of the regiment , participated in many of the most important battles of this war, for the distinction under Krasny he was promoted to major general . During the overseas campaigns of 1813-1814, he particularly distinguished himself in the battles of Dennevice , Leipzig and Laon [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree; on the right on the chest is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon , crosses of the Hessian-Kassel Order of Military Merit and the Prussian Order Pur le Merit (worn with a violation of the rules of wearing: this order should be worn either on the neck or lower on board the uniform). On the back of the picture there is an inscription: Zagratsky [3] . Signature on the frame: P.P. Zagryazhsky, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Zagryazhsky General Staff Certification Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on October 17, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on August 29, 1824 and June 21, 1827. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on July 8, 1827. Beginning in 1819, Zagryazhsky alternately commanded the 1st Hussar and 1st Dragoon divisions and permanently resided in Orel , at the beginning of 1826 he was promoted to lieutenant general [4] and already being in this rank at the end of December of the same year business affairs came to St. Petersburg ; probably then or at the beginning of 1827 he met with Dow, after which a portrait was painted [5] .
