Biography
In 1903 he made his debut on the stage in the production of Lucretia Borgia ( Italian: Lucrèce Borgia Lucrèce Borgia) under the direction of actress Sarah Bernhardt . He began acting in films since 1908. In the same year, he appeared in the short film “ The Murder of the Duke of Guise ” of the Film d'Art studio, directed by Charles Le Barges and Andre Calmett . In this first project of the studio created for the filming of highly artistic films in theatrical aesthetics, the leading actors of Comedy Frances took part.
In the 1910s, Angelo starred a lot in director Albert Capellani , who actually opened it for the movie. Among their joint works are the adaptation of Victor Hugo 's works “Notre Dame de Paris” (1911) with Henri Krauss in the role of Quasimodo , the series “Paris Secrets” (1911) and the four-episode film adaptation of “Les Miserables” (1913).
With the outbreak of World War I, he was forced to interrupt his acting career when he went to the front in 1914, from where he returned with battle wounds [5] [6] .
In 1917, Angelo starred with Sarah Bernhardt and Georges Melchior in the military propaganda film “Mothers of France” ( French Mère françaises ) directed by Louis Mercanton. In the same year he went to the United States to participate in the film “The Divine Sacrifice” ( English The Divine Sacrifice , 1918) of the American director of French origin George Archeynboda ( French George Archainbaud ). This was the first major role of Angelo at that time, and his only experience in American cinema [6] .
Returning to France even before the war ended, Jean Angelo continued to act in films of French directors, becoming in the 1920s a real star of French silent cinema . Being an experienced athlete and a confident fencer , Angelo became the hero of several successful adventure films. In 1921, he played Captain Morange in Atlantis (dir. Jacques Fader , 1921) based on the novel of the same name by Pierre Benois . Subsequently, he once again played this role in the French version of the already sound remake of 1932, staged by German director Georg Wilhelm Pabst . In 1920-1930, he also starred in other leading directors of French cinema, such as Jean Epstein , Victor Turyansky , Jean Renoir , Henri Fekour , Marcel L'Erbier and others.
In 1933, during the filming of the film adaptation of the novel “Colomb” by Prosper Merime, the actor contracted pneumonia and died on November 28 of the same year in the Paris Udino clinic at the age of 58 [7] .
