The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Andrei Aleksandrovich Efimovich from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Efimovich commanded the Alexandria Hussar Regiment , distinguished himself in the battle of Gorodechno . In overseas campaigns of 1813, he was wounded in the battle of Lutzen , for the difference at Brienne-le-Chateau, he was promoted to major general [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814, a greatcoat was thrown over his shoulders. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the chest there is a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon . On the back of the picture is an inscription: Effimovitch [3] . Signature on the frame: A. A. Efimovich 1st, General Mayor . When writing the awards, the artist missed the cervical cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree, with which Efimovich was awarded on February 4, 1813 for distinction near Gorodechno [4] , and the breast cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, which Efimovich received on May 20, 1808 years for the Battle of Friedland [5] .
On August 7, 1820, Ershov was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on June 4, 1823, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Efimovich died in early August 1823, and most likely did not have time to pose for Dow. In this case, the artist had to use a prototype portrait to write a gallery portrait; this prototype is unknown to modern researchers. The Dow fee was paid on June 21, 1827 and January 15, 1828. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on January 21, 1828. Since the previous delivery of the finished portraits to the Hermitage took place on July 8, 1827, the gallery portrait of Emelyanov can be considered executed between these dates [6] .
In the 1840s, in the workshop of Karl Kraya , a lithograph was made from the portrait and painted by I. A. Klyukvin , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [7] .
