The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Ivan Zakharovich Ershov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Ershov served in the Cavalier Guard regiment , distinguished himself in the First Battle of Polotsk , near Chashniki and Berezin . In the overseas campaigns of 1813, he fought at Lutzen and Bautzen , for the distinction under Kulm he was promoted to major general [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814, a fur coat was thrown over his shoulders. On the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and St. Anne of the 2nd degree with diamond signs, on board the uniform the cross of the Prussian Order of Pur le Merit ; on the chest there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon . On the back of the picture is an inscription: Erschof [3] . Signature on the frame: I.Z. Ershov 1st, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Yershov Certification Committee of the General Staff Building was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on March 17, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on July 1, 1822. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
In the workshop of Karl Kraya , a lithograph dated 1848 was published from the portrait by I. A. Klyukvin , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
