Biography

Josephine Onia was born July 15, 1986 in Lagos , Nigeria .

For the first time she showed herself in athletics on the international scene in the 2003 season, when she joined the Nigerian national team and performed at the Youth World Championships in Sherbrooke , where she took fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles.

In April 2007, following the example of another Nigerian runner, Glory Alosi, Oniya received Spanish citizenship and from that time began to represent the Spanish national team. One of her first achievements in the new team was a silver medal in the 100 meters hurdles at the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart .

In 2008, Josephine Onia won the European Cup indoors in Moscow in the 60m hurdles, while she was eighth at the indoor indoor championship in Valencia . At the IAAF Gold League competitions, the ISTAF in Berlin set Spain's national 100m hurdle record, showing a time of 12.50 seconds [1] . Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Beijing Summer Olympics - she stopped at the semifinals in the women 's 100m hurdles program. Later, in the same discipline, she won the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart , but it soon turned out that two of her doping tests made at the Athletissima competitions in Lausanne and the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart showed the presence of the banned substances methylhexanamine and clenbuterol, respectively. The Royal Spanish Athletics Federation decided not to punish the athlete, as her other two doping tests, made around the same time, were clean. The International Association of Athletics Federations appealed this decision to the Sports Arbitration Court , and the court sided with the association - Oniya was barred from participating in the competition for two years, and almost all of her achievements this year were canceled. At the same time, two positive doping tests were considered as one due to the fact that the athlete did not receive notification after the first test [2] [3] .

At the end of the period of ineligibility in January 2011, Josephine Onia returned to athletics and won the competition in Zaragoza [4] . In July of the same year, she again failed a doping test for methylhexanamine, and her disqualification lasted another two years [5] .

Oniya planned to perform at the 2015 World Championships in China , but in August it became known that a doping test at competitions in Spain showed the presence of anabolic steroids in the sample [6] . This time, taking into account relapse, she was disqualified for life [7] .

In 2016, Onia's double-checked doping test from the Beijing Olympics also turned out to be positive, so her results at the Olympics were also canceled [8] .
