The picture is a chest portrait of the general from the infantry Dmitry Sergeyevich Dokhturov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, the infantry general Dokhturov was the chief of the Moscow Infantry Regiment and commanded the 6th Infantry Corps of the 1st Western Army, led the defense of Smolensk , in the Battle of Borodino he commanded the center of the Russian position and, after the mortal wound of P.I. Bagration, led 2 th Western army. Then he led the Russian troops in street battles in Maloyaroslavets . During the overseas campaigns of 1813-1814, he commanded troops in the duchy of Warsaw and the Polish Army corps, led the siege of Hamburg [2] .

Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817 - this uniform is erroneously depicted, since Dokhturov died a year earlier and wore a uniform of 1808 with two rows of buttons. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 2nd class; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and stars of the orders of St. Alexander Nevsky , St. George of the 2nd class and St. Vladimir of the 1st degree on the right chest [3] . Signature on the frame: D. S. Dokhturov, General ot Infanterii .

Data on the circumstances of the portrait of Dokhturov were not revealed. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .

Since Dokhturov died in 1816, the Dow used a portrait portrait of an unknown artist to paint a gallery portrait, probably executed immediately after the Napoleonic Wars - Dokhturov is depicted in an authentic uniform on it. This portrait is in the collection of the museum-panorama "Battle of Borodino" (oil on canvas, 31.5 × 26.3 cm, inventory number Zh-58) [5] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, does not exclude the possibility that Dow could use the engraving by A. A. Osipov [6] , taken from the Borodino portrait in 1817; one of the prints of this engraving is in the Hermitage collection (paper, engraving with a dotted line, 25.5 × 14.7 cm, inventory number ERG-558) [7] . D. A. Rovinsky points out that there was a slightly reduced copy of this engraving published in 1822 [8] .

In the 1840s, in the workshop of I.P. Pesotsky , a lithography was made from the portrait, based on a drawing by I. A. Klyukvin , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced. As part of the print run, another, unsigned lithography from a gallery portrait was printed, characterized by insignificant details [9] .
