Cigarettes After Sex is an American ambient pop group founded in 2008 in El Paso by Greg Gonzales.

The group is known for its light and relaxed musical style, the “androgynous” voice of Gonzales, and the lyrics are often based on themes of romance and love [1] . In the sound of the group, the influence of shugase , dream pop and slowcore is also noticeable .
Content
History
Cigarettes After Sex was founded by Greg Gonzales in 2008 in El Paso, Texas. Gonzales recorded the first mini-album on the four-story staircase of his alma mater, the University of Texas at El Paso. This record will be released in 2012, and subsequently Gonzales will call it “an accident, a kind of experiment” [2] .
He moved to Brooklyn , where he recorded and released the single “Affection” in 2015 (along with a cover of REO Speedwagon's “Keep On Loving You” band). The song of the same name will be posted on YouTube, and after a short time the song “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby” from the first mini-album will quickly be distributed on the same video hosting site as a viral recording. Cigarettes After Sex become popular, after which they make tours in Europe, Asia and the USA [3] . A little later, “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby” will be played in the 7th episode of the first season of the series “The Handmaid's Tale” [4] , the 7th episode of “Sinners” [5] , the 1st episode of the first season of “Wanderlust” [6] and in the 9th episode of the eighth season of “Shameless” [7] . As of June 2019, the song will have 90 million views [8] .
On June 9, 2017, the group released its self-titled debut studio album, which later received positive reviews [9] .
July 11, 2017 the group gave its first concert in Russia, in the Moscow club “16 tons” [10] . After that, the group also performed in St. Petersburg. Exactly one year later, the group again performed in Moscow (at the Izvestia Hall venue), and also became the headliner of the Stereoleto festival in St. Petersburg [11] . In addition, the group also gave their first concert in Kiev [3] . The following year, the group again performed in two Russian capitals.
In 2018, the song "K" from the first album was heard in the second episode of the first season, "Killing Eve . "
Music Style
Kristina Kakuris in a review for Noisey describes the sound of Cigarettes After Sex as "elementary, foggy and romantic, but with noir facets." Greg Gonzalez considers Francoise Ardi his favorite singer, and puts the work of Miles Davis as the main influence [1] . The music blog Eardrums Music describes the band’s music as “slow, dreamy and beautiful with beautiful, gentle vocals and very good lyrics,” and compares it to Mazzy Star [12] .
As musical groups that Gonzales liked at certain points in his life, he mentioned Queen , The Beatles , The Beach Boys , Portishead , Isao Tomita and others [11] . He considers his French singer Francoise Ardi to be his favorite singer, with whom during the 2017 tour in Paris he was honored to meet and have dinner [3] .
