Club career
Christian Heidel's father is Herbert Heidel, former mayor and mayor of Mainz . After graduating from high school, he graduated from banking education and in 1984 started a family business in Mainz. In 1989, he became commercial director and partner of a mid-level car dealership in his hometown. Heidel has a son and two daughters.
From 1992 to 2016, Heidel served on the Board of Directors of Mainz 05 as a manager. Christian's stay at Mainz was a Bundesliga record for the length of his tenure. Heidel is considered one of the main "creators" of the sporting success of the club. It was Heidel who in 2001 appointed the ex-player of the club Jürgen Klopp (who does not have a coaching license) as the head coach of the team. Already in 2004, Mainz first entered the Bundesliga. Four years later, Klopp went to Borussia Dortmund in 2008. Klopp's successor - Norwegian Jorn Anderen did not succeed and left the team a year later. In 2009, five days before the start of the championship, Heidel again relies on a specialist from the club structure. She became the coach of the youth team "Mainz" Thomas Tuhel . The period under the control of Tuhelya was the most successful segment in the history of Mainz. In 2011 and 2014, Mainz ranked 5th and 7th respectively, allowing them to qualify for the Europa League . However, the team failed to qualify. After Tuchel left for Borussia (like his predecessor Klopp), Heidel signed a contract in the summer of 2014 with Danish coach Casper Hyulmand , who, however, was dismissed in February of the following year. The new coach was the Swiss coach of the second team of the club, Martin Schmidt.
Heidel significantly developed the system of promotion and training of young talents. "Mainz II" under the leadership of Heidel from the seventh time rose in the 2013/14 season in the Third League. Junior Academy "Mainz" was certified by the German Football League three stars - the highest league rank. In turn, juniors up to 19 years old won in 2009 under the direction of future head coach Thomas Tuchel, beating Dortmund Borussia in the final of the German championship.
Also in 2002, Heidel’s task was to expand the Bruchwegshtadion , Mainz’s home stadium, and to open the new Coface Arena , in which the “fighters” have been playing their home games since 2011. Under his leadership, Mainz 05 increased its annual turnover from three million (1992) to 78 million euros (2014).
Heidel carried out his management activities until September 2005. After his dealership went bankrupt in 2005, he became a job at Mainz and became his main activity. His employment contract was renewed in 2012 until 2017.
At the end of the 2015/16 season, he left Mainz and became the sports director of Schalke 04 in the 2016/17 season .
