Memorial to those who died during the Great Patriotic War

The memorial to those who died during the Great Patriotic War is a monument in Tolyatti dedicated to those who died during the Great Patriotic War .

History

First monument

The monument was originally erected in the late 1950s on the territory adjacent to the former cemetery of Stavropol (formerly Tolyatti ), partly flooded, partly hidden during the creation of the Kuibyshev reservoir .

The opening date is not exactly established, the information in the source varies: May 1958 or September 3, 1959 [1] . There is no clarity as to who exactly the monument was dedicated to. Journalist and local historian Sergei Melnik claims to have heard at least five conflicting versions on this subject. The surviving photographs show inscriptions on the pedestal: “ Military technician of the 2nd rank Vishnyakova Irina Vasilievna”, “Auto-military. engineer Petrenko Valentin Alekseevich "," Automotive technician Koloskov Yuri Alexandrovich "," Lieutenant Pechatnitsky ... " [2] .

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Victory, in 1975 they decided to reconstruct a rather unpretentious-looking monument [2] . The city newspaper "For Communism" wrote about it this way:

The project of reconstruction of a modest stele to people who died in the Stavropol hospital from wounds was completed by the artist Vitaly Kornilov in collaboration with the main artist of the city Arsen Korzh ... Already, the new memorial has become one of the most beautiful places in Togliatti. It is located on sacred ground. It was here in the 18th year that the first chairman of the executive committee, the 33-year-old Bolshevik Vasily Banykin, was buried ... Ten steps lead up to a spacious area. On it is a star-shaped monument of dark marble slabs. On a huge stone, the words: "The soldiers who fell in battles for the fatherland, we remember and honor forever" ...

- [3]

When registering a new monument, the names written on the previous one, but without indicating any posts, were transferred to it. Thirteen specific names with initials were knocked out: Alexandrova, Bohrakh, Vishnyakova, Guziy, Kamalova, Koloskov, Lavrenyuk, Petrenko, Pechatnitsky, Sapozhnikov, Sereda, Sushko, Tarakanova [2] .

Together with the stele established in 1967 for the participant in the formation of Soviet power in the city, the first chairman of the city executive committee of Stavropol V. Banykin, the monument formed a complex, which appeared in official documents as “Memorial complex: stele to V. V. Banykin; a memorial to soldiers who died from wounds during the Great Patriotic War ” [4] . Annually, veterans laid flowers at the monument for Victory Day , and it became an indispensable place for visiting newlyweds in Togliatti [2] . At the same time, various versions continued about who the monument was dedicated to. Someone believed that these were really the names of those who died from wounds in the Stavropol hospital, although there was no hospital at all in the city during the war. Others put forward different versions. So in the album “Monuments and valuable objects of architecture, urban planning and civil history of the city of Tolyatti”, released in 1995, the monument is listed as dedicated to “cadets of the Institute of Foreign Languages housed in the Lesnoye sanatorium” [2] .

In the early 2000s, employees of the city’s service for the protection of historical and cultural monuments of the city tried to sort out all these disagreements and inconsistencies in various sources and restore the biographies of those buried at the memorial complex. The registry office of the Central District of Tolyatti, upon a request for the names indicated on the memorial, said that although all thirteen persons listed on the monument really died during the Great Patriotic War, none of them died from wounds, as was supposed. Eleven names belong to children under the age of five. It turned out that the “military engineer” Valya Petrenko died of dyspepsia at the age of three, the “military technician” Ira Vishnyakova died of the same disease before she was two years old, the “automotive engineer” Yura Koloskov died of bronchitis at the age of one month. There were also errors in writing a number of names indicated on the monument. However, all of them really died from various causes during the Great Patriotic War [2] .

As a result, in 2001, a text plate was replaced on a stylized tombstone: the surnames were replaced with the text “To All Who Went Away 1941-1945” [2] , and the monument was called “Memorial to those who died during the Great Patriotic War” [1] .

Description

The monument is located on the banks of the Kuibyshev reservoir in the Portovy microdistrict of the city of Tolyatti. The memorial is made of granite and concrete [1] .

It is a memorial stone mounted on a stylobate . A stone is fixed on the stone with the text: "1941-1945. We remember and honor the warriors who fell in battles for the Fatherland. " In front of the stone is a stylized pyramidal tombstone with a text plate: “To all those who were killed by the war” [1] .
