Content

Types of crime

Killings

In 2012, the death rate in Burma was 15.2 per 100,000 people. In 2012, 8,044 murders were committed in Burma. [1] Factors affecting the high homicide rate in Burma include violence in society and armed conflict. [2]

Terrorism

Terrorism in Burma consists mainly of military activity directed against the government. Militant separatists in India, such as the United Front of the Liberation of Assam and the United Front of National Liberation, have bases in Burma from which they attack. [3]

Corruption

Burma is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. In 2012, according to the corruption index, the country was rated at 171 out of 176 countries as a whole. [four]

Opium and Methamphetamine Production

On the world map of the main producers of opium or heroin is the region of the Golden Triangle, of which Burma is a part. Burma is the world's second largest producer of opium after Afghanistan, producing about 25% of the world's opium.

Burma is the largest producer of methamphetamines in the world, with most of the yab located in Thailand, produced in Burma, especially in the Golden Triangle and the northeastern state of Shan, which borders Thailand, Laos and China. [5] The Yaba, produced by the Burmese, is usually shipped to Thailand via Laos, and then transported through the northeastern Thai region of Isan. [6]

In 2010, Burma transported 1 billion tablets to neighboring Thailand. [5] In 2009, the Chinese authorities seized more than 40 million tablets that were illegally exported from Burma. [7] Ethnic militias and rebel groups (in particular, the US Army) are responsible for much of this production; however, the Burmese military units are believed to be actively involved in drug trafficking. [five]

The fame of large drug dealers allowed them to penetrate other sectors of the Burmese economy, including banking, aviation, hotel and infrastructure industries. [8] Their infrastructure investments have enabled them to make more profits, promote drug trafficking and money laundering. [9]

Prostitution

Prostitution in Burma is an illegal social problem that especially affects women and children. [ten]

Burma is the main source of prostitutes (estimated at 20,000–30,000 people) in Thailand, with the majority of women trafficked going to Ranong, the region bordering Burma in the south, and Mae Sai, who is located on the eastern tip of Burma . [11] The situation is similar in Yunnan, China, especially in the border town of Ruili. [12] Most Burmese prostitutes in Thailand belong to ethnic minorities. [eleven]

60% of Burmese prostitutes are under 18 years old. Domestic trafficking in women for the purpose of prostitution comes from rural villages to urban centers, military camps, border towns and fishing villages. [13]

War crimes

The United Nations Human Rights Council has requested to investigate possible violations of human rights or war crimes in the country. [14]
