The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Vasily Timofeevich Denisov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Denisov commanded the Cossack brigade in the corps of M.I. Platov and was in many battles. After the exile of Napoleon, he took part in foreign campaigns of 1813-1814 and repeatedly distinguished himself in battles with the French [2] .
Depicted in the General's Cossack uniform, introduced in 1814, the Annensky ribbon was thrown over his shoulder, over which a lunar lanyard was launched. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree; on the right on the chest there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class and a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon . On the back of the picture is an inscription: Denisoff [3] . Signature on the frame: V.T. Denisov 7th, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Denisov General Staff Certification Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on May 20, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on April 4, 1824 and August 10, 1825. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825. Since Denisov died in Don in 1822 (on October 23 he was excluded from the list of the dead [4] ), it is highly likely that he did not pose for Dow, and the artist used a portrait prototype unknown to modern researchers [5] to paint his portrait.
