Biography

Born in 1803 in Mingrelia , in the village of and was the son of a nobleman Vakhushtiya [1] .

He was educated at the Mingrelsky Tsagerey Monastery , where on January 14, 1825 he tonsured monasticism with the name of Theophanes and on January 25 was ordained a hierodeacon [1] .

Since 1827 he was a missionary, first in Svaneti , then, ordained in 1833 as a hieromonk , he was transferred as a missionary to Abkhazia ; his activity culminated in the conversion to Christianity of 1000 souls of heathens and Mohammedans [1] .

In 1842 Theophanes was elevated to the rank of hegumen and in 1846 - to the rank of archimandrite . In 1848, he left Abkhazia and on September 20 was appointed rector of the Tsagerey Monastery [1] .

Moved to the Imereti Gaenaat Monastery in 1853, the following year he was elected and consecrated in Tiflis as bishop of Mingrelian [1] .

Theophan Gabunia died on June 1, 1859 [2] . A quarter of a century after his death (1885), by the merger of the territories of the Guri and Mingrel dioceses of the Georgian exarchate, a new Guri-Mingrel diocese was formed, which ceased to exist after the October revolution [3] .
