The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Count Andrei Ivanovich Gudovich from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Gudovich was the chief of the Order cuirassier regiment , was seriously wounded in the Battle of Shevardin and, for distinction, was promoted to major general . He returned to duty at the height of the Overseas Campaigns of 1813-1814 and fought in Prussia and Saxony [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the right on the chest are crosses of the orders of St. George of the 4th class and St. Vladimir of the 4th degree, a silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the Vladimir ribbon [ 3] . Signature on the frame: Graf A.I. Gudovich, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, Count Gudovich was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" by the Committee of the General Staff for Attestation, and on May 19, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. On February 26, 1823, Gudovich wrote to the Inspectorate Department of the War Ministry : “Because of my frequent trips, I only received one (a package from the Inspectorate Department) in Odessa . Now, having arrived in Moscow , I wanted, at your invitation, to go to St. Petersburg to take off my portrait, but my health did not allow me to do this, and I was forced to write off my portrait here, which I am sending through Colonel Zalessky to Mr. I’m going to take it off . ” The Dow fee was paid on April 25, 1823 and December 29, 1824. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] . The current location of the prototype portrait is unknown.
V.K. Makarov found this portrait completely devoid of similarities with typical Dow works [5] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, supported his opinion [3] .
