The picture is a bust portrait of Major General Timothy Dmitrievich Grekov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
From the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, the есаsoul of Greeks commanded a Cossack regiment, for numerous military differences he was promoted to colonel. In foreign campaigns of 1813-1814, he commanded a Cossack brigade and for the distinction in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig received the rank of major general [2] .
It is depicted in the uniform of the Generals of the Don Atamansky Regiment (the epauletting is depicted erroneously — red instead of blue), with a Cossack general's cap in his hand. On the left, a Star of the Order of St. Anne , 1st Class; on the neck are crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and the Prussian Order of Pur le Merit ; the cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, silver medal “In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s Ribbon , crosses of the Swedish Military Order of the 4th Degree Sword and the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph (images of ribbons of the Swedish and Bavarian orders are confused between themselves) and the gold cross “For the Capture of Ochakov” (depicted mistakenly instead of the gold cross “For the capture of Prague” ) [3] . Signed on the frame: TD Grekov 18th, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Greeks Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on May 22, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on October 16, 1826, and April 22, 1828. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on April 26, 1828. Since the previous delivery of the finished portraits to the Hermitage took place on January 21, 1828, the gallery portrait of Grekov can be considered executed between these dates [4] .
