Story

The story begins on behalf of the storyteller, who accidentally meets a former orchid hunter in an unspecified place and, while talking to him, understands that he had heard about him earlier, about how a rare orchid hunter got on a desert island near Madagascar, and asks him to tell this a story.

Butcher, the hunter’s name, says that in addition to rare species of orchids, he looked in the swamps for the remains and eggs of an extinct epiornis , a flightless bird that reached 3-5 meters in height. Due to an incident with fellow travelers, which occurred due to his fault, he finds himself alone on an uninhabited island with a previously found egg, from which hornworm hatches, which at that time had been considered a completely extinct bird for several centuries.

Butcher begins to live on a desert island along with the growing epiornis, but subsequently due to the aggressive behavior of the epiornis he has to kill him. The bones sold by Butcher are subsequently defined as a new species of epiornis.
