The picture is a chest portrait of the general from the cavalry of the Duke Alexander of Württemberg from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, the general from the cavalry, Duke Alexander Württemberg, was the chief of the Riga Dragoon Regiment and held the position of Belarusian Military Governor , then was at the headquarters of M. B. Barclay de Tolly and M. I. Kutuzov , distinguished himself in the Battle of Borodino , in battles at Tarutino and Maloyaroslavets . In overseas campaigns, he commanded the blockade of Danzig , after which he returned to the duties of the Belarusian governor [2] .

Depicted in the general uniform of the Riga Dragoon Regiment; a lunar bandage is thrown over the left shoulder, Andreevskaya ribbon is put on over the right shoulder; the right hand is stuck under the side of the uniform. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 2nd class; on board the uniform, a cross of the Württemberg Order "For Military Merit" is visible from under the arm; on the right side of the chest is the cross of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle ( A. A. Podmazo mistakenly identifies it as another cross of the Württemberg Order “For Military Merit” [3] ), a silver medal “In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s Ribbon , a bronze noble medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the Vladimir tape , crosses of the Württemberg Order of the Crown , the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph , an unidentified order (possibly the Württemberg Order of the Golden Eagle ) and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 3rd degree, gave its stars are the orders of St. Andrew the First-Called , St. George 2nd Class and the Württemberg Order "For Military Merit" and the embroidered star of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem [4] . Signature on the frame: Duke Alexander. Wirtemberg, Gene. From the Cavalry .

The circumstances of the portrait were not clarified. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [3] .

On September 1, 1827, in London by Messrs Colnaghi, commissioned by the St. Petersburg bookseller S. Florent, a dated engraving by G. Dow was removed and printed from the gallery portrait [5] .

The Hermitage collection contains a lithography by Gustav Luderitz, based on a portrait of Dow (paper, 52.5 × 40.8 cm, inventory number ERG-28891). She, observing the general compositional solution of the gallery portrait, differs significantly from the details: the right hand of the Duke of Württemberg is lowered down, and he himself is depicted in the cavalry general uniform of the sample dated April 6, 1814 [6] . In addition, there is an earlier drawing of Louis de Saint-Aubin, made in 1814, relative to the gallery portrait, which is compositionally close to the work of Dow; this drawing is also in the Hermitage collection (paper, black pencil, 47 × 37 cm, inventory number ERR-6139) [7] . In October of the same 1814 in London, an engraving by F. Vendramini was removed from him and published [8] .
