The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Alexander Lvovich Voinov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Lieutenant General Voinov was the chief of the Starodubovsky cuirassier regiment and commanded the 3rd Corps in the Danube Army of Admiral P.V. Chichagov , acted in Galicia against the Austro-Saxon troops, then commanded the 5th Corps in the 3rd The Western Army was shell-shocked at the battle of Stakhov. During the Overseas Campaign of 1813 he distinguished himself at Thorn . During the campaign, One Hundred Days at the head of the 5th reserve cavalry corps was again on a campaign in France [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd degree, on board the uniform a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the right on the chest there is a gold cross “For the capture of Bazardzhik” , a silver medal of the participant of the Patriotic War of 1812 and stars of the orders of St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Vladimir , 2nd degree [3] . Signature on the frame: A. L. Voinov, General Lieutenant .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for the certification of Warriors was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery." The Dow fee was paid on April 20, 1821. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
The Hermitage collection contains a lithograph by P.I. Meyer , made from a portrait of Dow in London at the request of St. Petersburg bookseller S. Florent, it shows the date of May 1, 1824 (paper, 67 × 51.5 cm, inventory number ERG-340) [5] . In contrast to the gallery portrait on lithography with a completely repeating image, an overcoat is thrown over his shoulder. A. A. Podmazo concludes that there was another portrait of Voinov by Dow, which served as a prototype for Meyer's lithography and whose current location is unknown, it is possible that this portrait was earlier in relation to the gallery [4] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, also believes that Meyer's lithography is based on an unknown portrait prototype of Dow's work [3] . Podmazo’s conclusions are based on the fact that in 1820-1821 Warriors served in Velikiye Luki , came to St. Petersburg on business in February and December 1820 and in February 1821, and he probably paid a visit to Dow on one of these visits - the image of the overcoat is possibly related to the time of year. Most likely, the Dow received an official fee for this now lost portrait [4] . At the end of 1824, Voinov was appointed commander of the Separate Guard Corps and moved to the capital [6] , respectively, he was not limited with time for posing for the artist [4] . Thus, it turns out that the gallery portrait was painted in 1825, but no later than August 30, when Voinov was awarded diamond signs for the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky [7] , which are not in the portrait.
