The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Prince Ludwig Georg Theodor Valmoden-Gimborn from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
In 1812, Walmoden was in the Austrian service with the rank of Field Marshal Lieutenant and in March 1813 he entered the Russian army as lieutenant general and headed the Russian-German Legion . Particularly distinguished himself in the battle of Dennevice and then commanded a corps in the Northern Army. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars he returned to Austrian service [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814, a greatcoat was thrown over his shoulder. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class and a cross of the English Order of the Bath ; a cross of the Austrian Military Order of Maria Theresa of the 3rd degree, a silver medal “In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a bronze noble medal “In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon and a badge of the Swedish Military Order of the Sword 2- st degree. On the back of the picture is the inscription: Walmoden [3] . Signature on the frame: Count Valmoden, Gene. Lieutenant . Since Valmoden was a foreign national and did not participate in the Patriotic War of 1812, both of the depicted medals were not awarded to him and, accordingly, he was not awarded with them - this is a gross mistake of the artist [4] .
On August 7, 1820, Valmoden was included in the list of “generals about whom the Committee does not dare to make conclusions, since they are in foreign service” and on August 10, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The fee for Dow's work was paid on June 21, 1827. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on July 8, 1827. Since the previous delivery of the finished gallery portraits took place on October 18, 1826, the writing of this portrait should probably be dated between October 1826 and July 1827 [4] . If this dating is taken as correct, then the Dow did not mistakenly portray the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree with diamond signs, which Valmoden was awarded in 1821 [5] .
