The picture is a bust portrait of Lieutenant General Karl Vasilievich Budberg from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Budberg commanded the Life Guard Cuirassier of His Majesty's regiment , was seriously wounded in the battle of Borodino . In 1813, for his distinction under Kulm, he was promoted to major general and completed the foreign campaigns during the siege of Paris [2] .
He is depicted in the General's Lifeguard Lifeguard Cuirassier of His Majesty the regiment of the sample of 1813, with Annensky tape over his shoulder, over which the mailing belt. On the neck are crosses of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle , 2nd degree and the Austrian Order of Leopold , 2nd degree; Crosses of the Order of St. George of the 4th degree and St. Vladimir of the 4th degree, silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's ribbon and the cross of the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph of the 3rd degree, to the right and lower under the Annan ribbon Kulmsky cross [3] . Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820 Budberg was included in the list of “generals whose service did not belong to before the Committee’s consideration” by the Headquarters Certification Committee, the decision to write his portrait was made earlier than this date, since on December 17, 1819 the Dow was paid The first part of the fee and November 12, 1820, he received the remaining money. Since on October 24, 1824, Budberg was appointed commander of the 2nd hussar division, he had to change the Guards cuirassier uniform to the general uniform of 1814–1817, respectively, the portrait was written earlier than this date. The finished portrait was adopted at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] . V. K. Makarov called this portrait one of the best works by Dow [5] .
In 1848, in the workshop of Karl Kray , a portrait dated lithograph was made from the portrait of I. A. Klukvin , published in the book "Emperor Alexander I and his Companions" and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [6] .
