The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Adam Ivanovich Bistrom from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Bistrom was the chief of the 33rd Jäger Regiment and the commander of the 3rd Brigade of the 11th Infantry Division; for the difference in the battle of Maloyaroslavets promoted to major general . During overseas campaigns he brilliantly proved himself in the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig and during the capture of Paris [2] .

Depicted in the general uniform of the Life Guards of the Pavlovsky Regiment (Bistrom commanded this regiment from the end of 1815), model 1813. Left on the chest under the lapel is the star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. George of the 3rd degree and St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree. On the lapel’s right is the silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and the cross of the Swedish Military Order of the Sword 4th degree. On the back of the painting are inscriptions: Bistrom 2 and Geo Dawe RA pinx t [3] . Signature on the frame: A. I. Bistrom, General Mayor .

Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the Bistrom Committee of the General Staff for Attestation was included in the list of “generals whose service does not belong before the consideration of the Committee,” the decision to paint his portrait was actually made earlier than this date, since Dow was already on December 17, 1819 an advance was paid and on May 17, 1820 he received the remainder of the fee. The portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .

In the 1840s, in the workshop of Karl Krai based on a drawing by I. A. Klyukvin , a lithography was made from the portrait, published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
