Biography
Born in the family of a carpenter and seamstress. After graduating from primary and secondary school from 1926 to 1929, he was trained as a driver, and then worked in his specialty at HF Eckert Landmaschinen Berlin. In 1931 he graduated from the evening department of the Bart College in Berlin, worked as an engineer in the field of general engineering.
In 1926 he joined the "Socialist German Workers' Youth" (SNRM), in 1931 - in the SPD , and then - in the SRPG .
In 1933 he left the SRPG. From 1933 to 1937, he had contacts with the "Group of Revolutionary Socialists." In 1935, the Gestapo interrogated him several times. Since 1937 he worked as an engineer at Siemens and illegally worked under the pseudonym Bruno Hoffmann in the group of Anton Zefkov . In July 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced in December by the People's Court “for hostile acts and preparation for high treason” to seven years in prison. Until his liberation by the Red Army in April 1945, he was in the Brandenburg Prison.
In 1945, he joined the ranks of the KKE , then after the merger of the SPD and the KKE in 1946, he became a member of the SED . From May to November 1945, he worked as a dispatcher in the district office in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin, then as mayor and instructor of the KKE in Trebbin / Ludwigsfeld. In 1946-1947 - First Secretary of the SED District Committee in Teltov. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Leipzig with a diploma in social sciences. Since September 1949 he was a personal adviser to the head of the Central Directorate of Agricultural Machinery.
In 1951-1954 - An employee of the Ministry of Internal German and Foreign Trade of the GDR, first as the head of the sector in China, and since 1954 - the head of the department of trade policy with the socialist countries. In 1956-1961 - Deputy Minister, responsible for general engineering.
In 1961-1965 - Minister of Internal German and Foreign Trade of the GDR. In 1965-1967 - Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the GDR, then - a representative of the GDR in the CMEA .
Member of the SED Central Committee (1963-1973). Member of the People’s Chamber of the GDR (1963-1973); in 1971-1973 - Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Since 1967, he was vice president of the League of Friendship of Peoples , and since 1971, he was president of the friendship society GDR-Belgium.
