The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Alexei Nikolayevich Bakhmetev from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Bakhmetev commanded the 23rd Infantry Division, was seriously wounded in the battle of Borodino (he was torn off his right leg above the knee), for the difference he was promoted to lieutenant general and more in military operations against Napoleon did not participate accepted [2] .

Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817; a crutch is leaned against the back of the chair on which Bakhmetev is sitting. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd degree; on board the uniform are crosses of the orders of St. Anne of the 1st degree with diamonds and St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the right chest bronze noble medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the Vladimir ribbon , silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew ribbon and stars of the orders of St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Vladimir 2nd degree. There is no star of the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree, since in the presence of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, the Annen star was supposed to be removed and a cross was hung around her neck (in this case, the cross is located on board the uniform). To the right of the epaulette is the artist's oblique signature: Painted from nature by Deo Dawe [3] . Signature on the frame with an error in the last name: A.N. Bakhmetyev 1st, General Leytenant .

On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Certification Committee Bakhmetev was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery." Since August 1814, Bakhmetev was the Kamenetz-Podolsk military governor and from May 1816 he was also the Bessarabian governor . On June 15, 1820, by request, he was fired on indefinite leave for treatment [4] and in early October he was traveling from Vilna to St. Petersburg - it was probably at this time that Dow started his portrait. A fee for finished work Dow was paid on April 20, 1821. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [5] .

Shortly after the portrait was painted by P. Meyer, the engraving was removed from it. In the 1840s, a lithography was made from the portrait in the workshop of IP Pesotsky , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced. When working with the original Dow, the copyist did not understand the image of the back of the chair and ignored it - it turned out that the crutch was unnaturally leaned against Bakhmetev’s shoulder [6] . In the circulation part, another lithograph from the gallery portrait was published, which differs in small details.

The publication " Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries " contains a copy of the portrait of Dow by an unknown artist dated 1821, in the form of an oval, owned by Prince N. P. Lopukhin-Demidov [7] , its current location is not established.
