The picture is a busting portrait of Major-General Peter Ivanovich Balabin from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Balabin was a colonel of the Cavalry Guard Regiment and aide-de-camp ; he was in Riga’s governor I. N. Essen and was in battles against the corps of Marshal Macdonald and during the naval bombardment of Danzig . During the foreign campaigns was under the Emperor Alexander I , participated in the battles in Prussia and for the differences was promoted to major general . During the Hundred Days again made a trip to France [2] .
He is depicted in a general's uniform, which was introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814, and a greatcoat is thrown over his shoulders. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree; crosses of the Prussian orders of the Red Eagle , 2nd degree and Pur le Merit stand out from under the uniform's uniform; on the right, the Order of St. George of the 4th degree and the silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's ribbon . In the lower left corner of the artist's signature: painted from nature by Geo Dawe RA On the back side of the picture there are inscriptions Balabin and Geo Dawe pinx t [3] . Signed on the frame: P. I. Balabin, General Mayor.
On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Committee for Certification Balabin was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on February 10, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow's work fee was paid on July 1, 1822. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
In 1848, in the workshop of Karl Kray , a portrait dated lithograph was made from the portrait of I. A. Klukvin , published in the book "Emperor Alexander I and his Companions" and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
