History
In 1892, a friend of the Canadian-American navigator, Joshua Slokam, Captain Eben Pierce [1] , offered him a vessel that needed repair. Slocum went to , Massachusetts , where he saw a crumbling old sloop, previously used for catching girls , called “Spray”. Having thoroughly repaired the vessel, which took more than a year of hard work and 553.62 dollars (equivalent to 15,438 dollars in 2018), Slocum retained his name.
On April 24, 1895, Joshua Slokam set out from Boston for a circumnavigation on the Spray, and more than three years later, on June 27, 1898, he returned to Newport , Rhode Island , rounding the globe and passing more than 46,000 in a single voyage . miles (74 thousand km). His sailboat became in 1901 an exhibit at the Pan American Exhibition . On November 14, 1909, Slokam decided to make another trip on the Spray, moving away from the island of Martas-Vinyard and taking a course towards South America - from that moment there was no news of him or his ship. [2]
There are several copies of Spray. [3] [4] One of them is located in the city of Fiumicino ( Italy ) and is called “Berenice”.
