The picture is a chest portrait of the general from the infantry of Prince Peter Ivanovich Bagration from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, the infantry general Bagration was the chief of the Life Guards of the Jäger Regiment and commanded the 2nd Western Army. In the battle of Borodino, he was mortally wounded [2] .
He is depicted in the general's uniform of the sample dated May 7, 1820 with the St. Andrew’s ribbon over his shoulder - Bagration could not wear such a uniform, since he died in 1812, and must be depicted in the uniform of the 1808 model. On the neck there are crosses of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky with diamonds, the Sardinian Order of Mauritius and Lazarus , the Austrian Military Order of Maria Theresa of the 2nd degree, the Orders of St. Anna of the 1st degree and St. George of the 2nd class; below the ribbon you can see the cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem ; on the right on the chest are the stars of the orders of St. Andrew the First-Called , St. George II Class and St. Vladimir 1st Class [3] . Signature on a frame with an error in a surname: P. I. Bogration, General ot Infanterii .
On June 12, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered the portrait of Bagration to be painted for the Military Gallery, and on July 26, the prototype of the portrait was handed over to Dow for work. Despite the fact that the finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage only on September 7, 1825, it should be dated no later than mid-1823, since Henry Dow made an engraving from the finished portrait in London with the date on it — August 1, 1823 [4] ; one of the prints of this engraving is in the Hermitage collection (paper, mezzo-tinto , 65.5 × 47 cm, inventory number ERG-332) [5] .
Regarding which particular painting served as the prototype for the gallery portrait, several versions were expressed.
Glinka considered that the source could be a portrait of Bagration painted by S. Tonchi and a 1805 engraving by J. Sanders , taken from this portrait [6] . Rovinsky also noted the similarity of the engraving of Sanders with the engravings taken from the portrait of Toncha [7] . One of the prints of this engraving is in the Hermitage collection (paper, engraving with a chisel, 34.7 × 23.1 cm, inventory number ERG-328) [8] .
The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, notes that the portrait of Dow has a strong resemblance to the drawing by G.-J. de Saint-Aubin , available in the Hermitage collection, and the engraving by F. Vendramini from this drawing, issued by J. Boydel in 1813 [3] , this engraving is also in the Hermitage collection (paper, dotted engraving, 28.6 × 21.8 see inventory number ERG-544) [9] .
However, A. A. Podmazo argues that both Tonchi’s work and Saint-Aubin's drawing, followed by Vendramini's engraving, have little to do with the portrait of Dow; Podmazo believes that Dow used as a prototype a portrait of Bagration by an unknown artist, now stored in the collection of the Rybinsk Museum-Reserve [4] (oil on canvas, 53.5 × 45, inventory number Ж-849) [10] .
L. A. Dukelskaya, in her essay on English art, describing the Military Gallery, noted:
Sharp expressiveness and romantic elation are organically combined with accuracy in conveying the similarities inherent in the best portraits of this grand cycle. Such are the images of Bagration, Ermolov , Seslavin [11] .
