The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Karl Fedorovich Baggovut from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Lieutenant General Baggovut was the chief of the 4th Jäger Regiment and commanded the 2nd Infantry Corps in the 1st Western Army. Brilliantly proved himself in the battle of Borodino , where after the mortal wound of General N. A. Tuchkov took command of the left flank of the Russian troops. In the battle of Tarutino, he led an attack on French positions and was killed [2] .

Depicted in the general's uniform of the sample dated May 7, 1820 - Baggovut could not wear such a uniform, since it died in 1812, and wore the uniform of the 1808 model with two rows of buttons. On the neck crosses of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree, St. George of the 3rd degree, the Prussian Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; the star of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky is erroneously shown on the right chest [3] - he was awarded this order after the Battle of Borodino and before the Battle of Tarutino simply did not manage to receive it [4] . Signature on a frame with an error in a surname: K. F. Fon-Bogovut, Gene. Lieutenant .

On August 7, 1820, Baggovut was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery." A fee for the finished work of the Dow was paid on November 12, 1820, but it was not handed over to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825. Since Baggovut died in 1812, there was a prototype gallery portrait. The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, believes that Baggovut's portrait by French artist O. Vernet or a drawing by G.-J. de Saint-Aubin , available at the Hermitage collection [5] . However, A. A. Podmazo claims that the prototype was the miniature medallion of an unknown artist, published in the publication “ Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries ” [6] , which is currently in a private collection [4] . On a miniature Baggovut is depicted in the correct uniform - a sample of 1808 with two rows of buttons.

In the 1840s, a lithography was made from the gallery portrait in the workshop of I. P. Pesotsky , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [7] . In part of the print run, a lithograph of P. Petit’s workshop was printed from a drawing by V. Dolle .
