The painting is a chest portrait of Major General Alexander Ivanovich Albrecht from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Albrecht was a colonel of the Life Guards of the Dragoon Regiment , in the corps of P.H. Wittgenstein he commanded the Consolidated Cavalry Regiment, was in battles near Polotsk , at Chashniki and Smolyany . During overseas campaigns he participated in battles in Prussia and France , was wounded, for the difference in the battle of Fer-Champenoise was promoted to major general [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left is the star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on board the uniform are crosses of the orders of the Prussian Pur le Merit , St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and the Polish St. Stanislav ; on the right side of the chest there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th degree, a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , crosses of the Austrian Order of Leopold of the 3rd degree and the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph 3rd degree, as well as a star of the order St. Vladimir 2nd degree. On the back of the picture is an inscription: Albrecht [3] . Signature on the frame: A.I. Albrecht, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Albrecht Attestation Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of “generals whose service does not belong before the Committee was considered” and on January 27, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered a portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on July 31 and November 27, 1823, but the Hermitage portrait has the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree, which Albrecht was awarded only on June 2, 1825 [4] . Albrecht himself at the end of the Napoleonic Wars served in Warsaw , and in St. Petersburg was only short-term visits. A. A. Podmazo suggested that Dow originally painted a portrait of Albrecht during his arrival in St. Petersburg in late September 1822, and Albrecht is depicted on it without a Vladimir star; The current location of this portrait is unknown. The portrait for the Military Gallery was painted from nature during the arrival of Albrecht in the capital in July 1825 and on September 7 the finished work was handed over to the Hermitage [5] .
In the 1840s, in the workshop of Karl Krai , a lithography was made from the portrait, based on the drawing by I. A. Klyukvin , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [6] .
