UFC Performance

The first tournament in the history of promotion was held in Denver on November 12, 1993 [5] . Representatives of different fighting schools took part in it: sumo , boxing , wrestling , Brazilian jiu-jitsu , taekwondo , savata, etc. There were eight applicants in the tournament grid. There were no weight categories provided for in the competition. The round lasted five minutes. According to the rules, their number was not limited. The battle could be stopped only after the surrender of one of the fighters or a knockout . The winner of the tournament had to get a prize of $ 50,000 [6] . At that moment, Gerard was training in the same room with Ernesto Host , but the organizers could not afford to bring the K-1 champion and limited themselves to inviting a more modest teammate, who at that time worked as a guard for pimps and pornstars [7] .

The competition opened with a duel between Gordo and Sumo representative Dale Thule from the Hawaiian Islands . Gerard was dressed in white pants, and the opponent in the likeness of a tribal skirt. The fight lasted thirty seconds. The Dutch kickboxer hit Thule with his left foot in the head and knocked out several teeth. One of them flew into the commentator of the fight Katie Long - the wife of John McCarthy , and two more were stuck in Gordo’s leg. After Gerard inflicted a right uppercut and the Hawaiian fell on the canvas. Later it turned out that the Dutch athlete had broken several knuckles on his fist after this blow. At the first UFC tournament, fighters did not use gloves [3] [8] [9] .

Gerard's next rival that day was Kevin Rosier . Both fighters represented kickboxing. Rosier was worn out after the first fight with Zayn Fryer . Proudly actively attacked his rival with jabs and lowki . As a result of one of the hits, Rosier donkey in the cage. Proudly finished off the opponent with his feet and elbow, after which a white towel was thrown out by the seconds. In the finals of the Dutchman, Royce Gracie , the representative of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, was waiting. By that time, Gerard had his second arm damaged, and he held both limbs in a bucket of ice. At the beginning of the fight, the Brazilian hooked Gordo and climbed on top. Gerard bit Royce's ear. He managed to tear him out of the jaw of the Dutchman and hold a strangulation. So Gracie became the first champion from the history of UFC.

Proudly was angry with the Gracie family, as he believed that he should have met Royce in the quarterfinals, but thanks to manipulations they got them in the tournament bracket. According to the Dutchman, the Brazilians heard about his cruelty from Japanese journalists and tried to avoid meeting at an early stage of the competition [10] [11] .

At the second UFC tournament in 1994, Gordo flew in as an eliminating second.

Performance at the Vale Tudo Tournament

Two years after playing in Denver, Gerard went to Japan for the Val Tudo Tournament. During the fight with Yuki Nakai, Gordo tried to squeeze his eye out. The Japanese suffered and won that battle, making Gerard a hilhook in the fourth round. Nakai won the next fight in that tournament, but ended his martial arts performances forever, blinding him in one eye [12] .

Performance in other promotions.

On August 13, 1988, Gordo fought in front of 12,000 viewers with Japanese Akira Maeda in Tokyo according to the UWF . A special fight took place according to the rules of “fighter against kickboxer”. Proudly lost in the fourth round by a painful trick [13] .

Performance in wrestling

In the RINGS promotion, he fought with the Japanese Masaake Satake and Mitsui Nagai [14] . Proudly defeated the latter at 37 seconds of the battle (12/07/1991). In a duel with Satake, the Dutchman was disqualified (01.25.1992) [15] .

In 1995, Gordo performs in the Battle 7 tournament in Japan, where he loses to Antonio Inoki [16] .

From 1998 to 1999, he fought three times according to the UFO. From 2001 to 2010, Gordo held 9 fights according to the ZERO-ONE version, of which 6 won. Also in 2005, he lost at the BML Illusion tournament [17] .

Coaching

She has been proudly training since 1985. Gerard, along with his brothers Nick and Al, owns the Kamakura Hall in The Hague . Kamakura is the historical era in Japan from 1185 to 1333, when martial arts reached their greatest development in this country. Its name was taken from the city of the same name, which was the capital of the first shogunate . The main qualities of the Shoguns of the Kamakur era were: diplomacy, perseverance and patience. It was these concepts that became the motto of the Gordo Dojo . During the existence of the hall, many professional athletes trained in it: Andre Mannaart , Daniel Gita, Murad Buzidi, Fujita, Ed de Cruyff, Kimo, Parduel. Most of Gordo's Dutch colleagues who originally practiced Kyokushinkai stopped teaching their basic sport after achieving success in Muay Thai, kickboxing and mixed martial arts (talk about Jan Plas , Tom Harrink , Lucien Carbin , Johan Vos ). In spite of everything, there are two specialized disciplines in the Kamakura Hall - kekushinkai and kickboxig. Since 1991, the annual Kamakura-Kyokushin rules have been held. Many famous athletes participated and won: David Pitkhol, Gilbert Avel , Igor Peplov, Rodney Faverus, Sergey Osipov, Felix Ntumaza, Vasily Khudyakov, Maxim Dedik , Victor Texeyra, Kanan Yurulmaz [18] .
