Built between 1877 and 1884, the museum was built in the style of neoclassicism and neo-baroque ( eclecticism ) and is located on Paks Avenue [2] , near the Palace of Nations . It got its name in honor of the founder's mother. Their personal letters and photos are also presented on the 2nd floor of the museum. A private collection of a Swiss collector and patron after his death became the property of the municipality [1] .

Since 1934, the museum has been a member of the Geneva Association of Art and History Museums , headed by the Museum of Art and History [1] . Subsequently, parts of the collection were transferred to other museums of the association, and new exhibits were received in exchange to focus the collection on glass and ceramics.

In 1993, the museum was reopened after 12 years of reconstruction work [1] .
