Biography
Leonid Toptunov was born on August 16, 1960 in the village of Nikolaevka, Burynsky District, Sumy Region, Ukrainian SSR. In 1983 he graduated from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. The practice took place at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He worked as an engineer of the control panel, and later began to work as a senior engineer for reactor control of the IV unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He worked at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant from March 3, 1983, to May 14, 1986.
Chernobyl accident
On the night of April 25-26, Leonid Toptunov was present at his workplace. During the accident, he was at the console of a senior RBMK-1000 reactor control engineer. After the accident, he participated in the localization of the consequences of accidents, namely, he supplied water to the reactor core. Leonid Fedorovich was on the territory of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant until the end of the shift, and upon its completion he was taken to Pripyat MSC-126, and later was delivered to Moscow Clinical Hospital No. 6.
Death
Toptunov was found to have symptoms of acute radiation sickness. After the delivery of Leonid Fedorovich to Moscow, he underwent a bone marrow transplant. But on May 14, 1986 Toptunov died. The cause of death was acute radiation sickness of the fourth degree.
Leonid Fedorovich Toptunov was buried at the Mitinsky cemetery.
By presidential decree 1156/2008 of 12.12.2008 Leonid Fedorovich Toptunov was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage of the III degree.
On April 26, 2016, a memorial plaque to Leonid Fedorovich Toptunov was installed at the MEPhI Institute.
