Biography

Born in Sungai-Puar in West Sumatra . He studied medicine in Jakarta for three years until he was forced to quit his studies due to illness. The first job was related to public service, and later Abdul Muis became a journalist who criticized the Dutch colonial authorities in Indonesia. In 1928 published the novel "The Wrong Education ". He translated into Indonesian the works of Western authors: “Don Quixote” by Cervantes (1923), “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain (1928), “Without Family” by Hector Malo (1932).

Hoping for more active participation in the political life of Indonesia, Muis joined the liberation movement Sarekat Islam . Convinced of the futility of a peaceful solution to the question of the independence of Indonesia, he advocated forcibly liberating the country from the colonial authorities. However, he later became a member of the People’s Council , a representative body created by the Dutch authorities. In 1922, Muis took part in a strike in the city of Yogyakarta , for which he was arrested and sent to serve his sentence in the city of Garut in West Java.

He died in 1959 . Buried in the city of Bandung .
