Game career

Club

A graduate of the English clubs Oldham Athletic and Arsenal, he began his career in the Cretan club OFI as an attacking midfielder. The club was then led by Dutchman Eugene Gerards and Nikki played there for five years. In August 1993, it was bought out by the Newcastle United submarine club for £ 120,000 and signed a two-year contract, becoming the first legionnaire from Cyprus in the history of the English championship [1] . He made his debut game on August 14, 1993 against the Tottenham Hotspur club, but he played only 7 matches of the season and returned to the OFI. In 1996, Papavasiliou returned to Cyprus, becoming a player of the Limassol Apollo, for which he played for 4 years. In 2000 he moved to Anorthosis, however, during the 2000/2001 season, it was acquired on a loan basis by the Enosis and Olympiacos clubs from Nicosia [2] . He completed his career at APOEL in 2003 [2] .

Team

Papavasiliou played 38 matches for the Cyprus national team in 1990-1999, distinguishing himself 5 times [3] [4] .

Coaching career

Papavasiliou in 2010

Papavasiliou has coaching licenses of categories A and Pro [5] . He started his coaching career with the APEP club in the second division of the 2006/2007 season, later he headed the Olympiacos club from Nicosia, which failed in the second division. In the 2007/2008 season, the team fought until the last round, but lost to the Nea Salamina club 2: 1, which entered the First Division, and remained in 4th place [6] . In the summer of 2009, he became a mentor at the OFI club, working with former teammate Miron Sifakis in the 2009/2010 season, but was immediately dismissed due to a poor start [7] . and returned to Olympiacos, who entered the First Division following the results of the 2009/2010 season from third place. Until January 2011, he coached Doksa from Katokopios, and then Enosis, who took 6th place in the First Division of 2010/2011. In February 2012, Papavasiliou headed the Nicosian Olympiacos for the third time [8] .

In September 2012, Papavasiliou entered into an agreement with the Limassol Apollo, for which he spoke in 1996–2000, and thereby terminated the contract with Nicosians [9] . In March 2013, however, he was fired from the club - under his leadership, the team won 9 matches, tied 6 and lost 6 more [10] . In September 2014, he headed the Ermis club, but in February 2015 he was again dismissed due to unsatisfactory results [11] . On August 21, 2015, he headed the Bratislava Slovan, with whom he reached the final of the Slovak Cup 2016 [12] . The team took 2nd place in the First League 2015/2016 , losing only to Trencin and scoring 64% of victories in matches. However, after three matches of the next season, he was fired [13] . Since May 2018, Papavasiliou has led Ergotelis from the Greek Super League [14] , who, under his leadership, made it to the quarterfinals of the Greek Cup for the first time since 1986 in the season 2018/2019 [15]

Other football activities

Papavasiliou worked as a scout for the Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United clubs, and he also leads the Nikki Football Academy in Cyprus [5] .
