Personal life
Francisco Gonzalez was born in 1955 in Germany , where his father served at the US military base in Wiesbaden . The family later moved to Puerto Rico , where Francisco grew up in the city of Guainabo [2] .
In the years 1974-1977, Gonzalez studied at Ohio State University in 1974-1976 [2] . He also holds a first degree in business administration from the Inter-American University in Puerto Rico in 1997 [3] . In 1980, Gonzalez married his school friend Vivian [2] .
Sports career
Francisco Gonzalez started playing tennis at the age of ten. His successes at the junior level were high enough to get a sports scholarship at Ohio State University [2] . There he spent three years, in 1975 and 1976, winning the Big Ten championship in singles. In his second year, he entered the third round of the NCAA championship , and the next year - in the quarter-finals and was selected to the symbolic amateur national team of North America ( Eng. All American ) [4] . During his studies, Gonzalez took part in the 1975 Pan American Games [3] .
Gonzalez began his professional tennis career in 1977. He won his first title in the Grand Prix tournaments (the main professional tennis tour of that period) in 1979 in tandem with the American Eliot Telcher in Tulsa (Oklahoma), and at the US Open that same year reached the quarterfinals, defeating in the second round of Brian Gottfried and Raul Ramirez . The following year, Gonzalez became the quarter-finalist of the French Open in a pair with Bob Lutz , losing to the same American-Mexican pair. Later that year, Gonzalez, who was ranked 118th in the ATP ranking , unexpectedly reached the finals of the prestigious Cincinnati singles tournament - the ATP website calls this performance the best tournament in his career [2] . In the first round, he beat Stan Smith's 21st racket of the world, and in the semifinals, who ranked third in the Jimmy Connors ranking, before giving way to Harold Solomon’s seventh racket of the world.
1981 was marked for Gonzalez by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open in Mixte , where his partner was former US champion in this category Pam Tigarden . In the semifinals, the fifth sown pair lost to future champions Andrea Jager and Jimmy Arias [5] . The following year, Gonzalez agreed to play for the Paraguayan national team in the Davis Cup . This made it possible for the Paraguayans to finally present a full-fledged team in this competition - before that they did not have tennis players of a high enough level who could support the national tennis leader Viktor Pechchi in the national team tournament. In the very first year of their performances, Pecci and Gonzalez led the Paraguayan national team to the title of champions of the American group, securing it the next season with a place in the World Group - the highest level of the tournament [2] .
In 1984, Gonzalez won four doubles Grand Prix tournaments, in three of which his partner was American Matt Mitchell ; two titles were conquered in Ohio - at Chiveland and Cincinnati [2] . In Brisbane, Australia, Gonzalez not only won a pair with Mitchell, but also reached the second in his career finals of the Grand Prix tournament in singles; occupying the 116th position in the ranking, he defeated three of the first hundred opponents, losing only to Telcher - at that time the 13th racket of the world. The following year, he achieved the highest career success in Grand Slam tournaments : Gonzalez and American Paul Smith , being unseeded at the French Open, pulled the second and fifth seeded couples out of the fight and reached the final, where in three sets they lost to the first pair of Martin Navratilova - Heinz Günthardt [6] . By the end of the year, the Paraguayan occupied the 24th place in the ATP ranking among paired players.
His last three finals of the Grand Prix doubles tournament Gonzalez held in 1989, without winning a victory in any of them. He continued appearances in individual tournaments until 1988, and in the Davis Cup until 1989. In total, over the years of performances for the national team of Paraguay, Gonzalez brought her 8 wins in singles and 11 in doubles. In 1987, his name was added to the Ohio State University Hall of Fame [3] [4] .
Already since 1984, in parallel with the performances, Gonzalez was engaged in coaching, starting a new stage in his career at the Dayton Sports Club (Ohio). Later he coached in Florida, Guainabo, where in the first half of the 1990s he trained the Puerto Rico team for performances in the Davis Youth Cup, and Fresno (California), where he opened his own tennis academy. Among the tennis players he worked with as a coach is Sloan Stevens , winner of the 2017 US Open [3] [7] .
