2002 World Cup (Qualifying Tournament, UEFA Group 9)

Group 9 of the qualifying tournament of the UEFA zone for the 2002 World Cup consisted of five teams: Albania, England, Germany, Greece and Finland. Matches in the group took place from September 2, 2000 to October 6, 2001.

England won the group ahead of Germany in personal meetings and qualified for the World Cup - a victory on September 1, 2001 in Munich with a score of 5: 1 became a key for the English, and a draw with Greece 2: 2, which brought the English goal from a free kick David Beckham in the last minute, guaranteed them access from first place to the World Cup. The German national team took 2nd place and went into butt games: not only a painful defeat from England, but also two point losses with Finland became a fatal for them - a 2-2 away draw (despite the fact that Germany lost 0-2) and home draw 0-0 in the last round.

Highscores and Highlights

  • Michael Owen became the best scorer of the group, scoring six goals - three of them flew into the goal of Germany in the away game on September 1, 2001, which ended in a sensational victory for the British with a score of 5: 1. After the game, the father of the German national team coach Rudy Feller , shocked by the defeat of his team, suffered a heart attack [1] .
  • Despite the key victory over Germany at a party, England registered for the World Cup only in the last round - David Beckham's goal only allowed him to equalize the game against Greece, but Germany, which claimed the first place, could not open the account in the match against Finland and went into the butt [1] .
  • For the first time, the England team held official matches under the guidance of a foreign specialist - Swede Sven-Joran Ericsson [1] , who replaced Kevin Keegan , who was dismissed after a home defeat from the Germans [2] .
  • The match October 7, 2000 England - Germany was the last for the old Wembley stadium, which was demolished, and the new stadium opened in 2007. The last goal on it was scored by the German Dietmar Hamann , bringing victory to the Germans. In May 2005, a survey was conducted on how to name the bridge on the new Wembley, and although the name Dietmar-Hamann Bridge was the leader in the survey, marking the last goal at the old stadium, the final name was White Horse Bridge [3] .
