He was educated at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen , after which he went to Rome as an artist, where he stayed from 1772 to 1777. Upon returning to his homeland, he became a professor at the Danish Academy of Arts , in 1789 - 1792 and then from 1802 he was its director. He died near Fredericksdal on June 4, 1809.
Abilgor is considered the founder of the Danish school of painting. Of his many historical and allegorical paintings in the castle of Christianborg during the fire of 1794, only a few were saved; but enough of his paintings remained in Copenhagen. His students are B. Thorvaldsen and K. Eckersberg .
