The China Merchants Bureau was founded in 1872 in Shanghai . After the Chinese revolution, it became the link between the People's Republic of China and the rest of the world, its activities mainly consisted of transport between mainland China and Hong Kong. In the 1980s, dozens of subsidiaries were created in various sectors of the economy, including China Merchants Bank (1987) and Ping An Insurance (1988). In 1992, China Merchants International Holdings (CMIH) was created on the basis of part of the group’s assets (mainly in the area of port terminals), which the next year became the first company from China to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange . As of 1995, the China Merchants group ranked 26th among the 500 largest state-owned companies in China, its assets were estimated at HK $ 50 billion (US $ 6 billion), and it included about 500 subsidiaries. In 1997, these structures were distributed among 12 companies, the largest of which was CMIH [3] . In 2016, China Merchants International Holdings was renamed China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited. In 2017, the total cargo turnover of the controlled companies exceeded 100 million TEU for the first time (twenty-foot containers, 1 TEU ≈20 tons) [4] . In July 2017, a concession was received for the development of the port of Hambantota in Sri Lanka; The company plans to invest more than a billion dollars in creating port infrastructure. In Sri Lanka, CMPort is already the operator of the Colombo port with a cargo turnover of more than 2 million TEU per year [5] [6] . The international presence was further enhanced by the purchase in September 2017 of a 90 percent stake in the Brazilian company TCP Participações SA, which operates the second largest port in the country of Paranagua; the amount of the transaction amounted to $ 923 million [7] .

In February 2018, a stake in Shenzhen Chiwan Wharf Holdings Limited (the largest operator of the Shenzhen port) was sold, the buyer was China Merchants, the deal amounted to about HK $ 11 billion ($ 1.5 billion) [8] .
