Krynochka ( Polish. Krynoczka ) is a spring in Belovezhskaya Pushcha 3 km from Hajnówka , revered by Orthodox Christians and a place of pilgrimage.
According to legend, in the XIII century, the monks of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra , fleeing the Tatars, founded a monastery near the source. Since ancient times, this place was called the tract of Mednoe, by the name of a stream flowing nearby [1] [2] .
In the 1820s, a well of concrete rings was built over the source, and the gate from the boards was replaced by a dam [3] . In 1831, authorities drew attention to a healing source. The commission that conducted the study of water found sulfur and iron in it. There were plans to open a sanatorium here, but they were not implemented. In 1848, the Church of the Holy Maccabees Brothers was opened near the source. In the 19th century, services were held only on the day of the holy Maccabees and the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross , and since 1894 also on the second day of Pentecost [1] .
After World War II, the territory on which the source is located was given to the military. In 1955, they proposed moving the church to the neighboring village of Lipiny , and letting water run through pipes, but the then abbot Anthony Golub rejected this offer. For many years, visiting the shrine was possible only singly, group pilgrimage was prohibited. Since 1997, Krynochka is again a place of pilgrimage [1] .
The pilgrimage to the shrine is traditionally performed on the second and third day of Pentecost [1] [4] .
