Biography
Born in the family of the artist Sergei Ivanovich Borodkin (1850β1938?). Since 1910, together with his father, he became one of the first artists in the Fedoskino artel of painters , where he painted various products from papier-mΓ’chΓ© [1] . The artel was founded in 1910 in the village of Semenishchevo thanks to the financial support of the industrialist Savva Morozov and the zemstvo . Production of the artel quickly gained popularity, its craftsmen began to receive orders from St. Petersburg and from abroad [2] .
Although during the revolutionary years half of Fedoskino painters went to war, Vasily Borodkin himself continued to work in the artel until 1941. In 1923, at the first All-Russian Agricultural and Handicraft Industrial Exhibition, the association of masters was awarded a diploma of the first degree, and for the preservation of its production during the years of the Revolution and the Civil War - also a diploma of appreciation. However, in the 1920s, craftsmen from other workshops who did not possess the technique of Fedoskino writing began to work in the artel, which led to a decrease in the quality of products. Borodkin remained one of the few masters of the old school [2] .
He died in 1944 [1] .
