Biography

Philip II was the son of Duke Philip I of Braunschweig-Hrubenhagen and his wife Catherine of Mansfeld (1501-1535). Philip II was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters, six of whom came of age. After the death of Duke Philip I in 1551, his first successor was his eldest son Ernst III . After the death of Ernst in 1567, his brother Wolfgang became ruler. When in 1595 he also died without male heirs, Philip II became Prince of Grubenhagen.

Duke Philip II was married to his cousin Clara Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1532–1595), appointed abbess of Gundersheim. She abandoned this church post after the abbey was occupied and plundered by the troops of the Schmalkalden Union during the Reformation . The couple settled in a secularized monastery in Katlenburg , which Philip II rebuilt in the Renaissance style.

In 1595, the Duke Philip II moved his residence from Katlenburg to Herzberg Castle. He ruled for less than one year. When he died childless in 1596, the Welfs Gruenhagen sideline was cut short, and the Principality of Grubenhagen was annexed by his cousin Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . However, the Lüneburg branch by Welfa opposed annexation and referred the matter to the imperial cameral court . In 1617, after a lengthy trial, the son of Heinrich Julius, Friedrich Ulrich , had to cede the former principality of Grubenhagen to Duke Christian Braunschweig-Luneburg .
