Geography

The area of the island is 269 km². It is 24 km long and 16 km wide. In recent years, the state program for reforestation has been operating here, but the main attraction of May, like the islands of Sal and Boavista , are picturesque sandy beaches.

Geology

Mayu Island is an ancient volcano, sleeping for thousands of years and prone to wind erosion. Due to the powerful volcanic impulse that raised the island to the surface of the ocean, sedimentary rocks over 190 million years old were also carried up, and are still distinguishable. Volcanologists believe that Mayu is most likely the oldest island in the archipelago.

At the base of the island are Upper Jurassic pilow lavas, tholeiitic basalts , overlain by metal-bearing sediments. Further, the thickness of the Upper Jurassic- Neocomian tiled limestones with coagulation and a layer of gray flints. They are overlain by the Aptian-Albian stratum of Mergels . The next superstructure is the Alb-Cenomanian mass. It marks the beginning of the rise of the island. Next, alternating layers of tuff-aleurolites , tuff sandstones , tuff-gravelites , marls and limestones are formed , passing into tuffs , with agglomerates and tuff-conglomerates , which were already formed on the ground [1] .

History

Mayu was one of the first to be discovered on the archipelago in 1460 .

The population of the island has long been engaged in the cultivation of goats and the extraction of salt, the export of which to Brazil continued until the end of the 19th century .
