History

According to legend, the church was built in the second half of the XIV century by the founder of the Murom monastery, the Monk Lazar of Murom [1] . The Monk Lazarus died in 1391 at the 105th year of his life and was buried near the altar of the temple. In 1811, a chapel was built on his grave [2] . Scientific research dated the temple in the range from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. According to the compromise version, in the XIV century the main and altar premises were built, and the frame canopy was added in the XVI century [1] . On the website of the Kizhi Museum-Reserve, the construction date is the 15th century [3] .

Over time, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist appeared in the Murom Monastery, and the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus appeared behind the monastery "on the Grave", that is, in the cemetery. In the mid-15th century it was mentioned that Abbot Athanasius , the successor of the Monk Lazarus, “was not buried in the cemetery near the Church of the Resurrection, but in the monastery itself” [2] .

Mentioned in the scribe books of Yuri Saburov in 1496, Andrei Plescheev 1583, Prince Ivan Dolgoruky and the clerk Posnik Rakov in 1628. The latter indicates that the temple is a cage type , and the interior is also described for the first time: “And in the church of images: the image of the local Lazarev Sunday on paint; the image of the Holy Virgin Hodegetria in paint; Deesis and the king's doors and canopy and columns in the paint; Yes, in the altar behind the throne, the image of the Most Holy Theotokos Hodegetria, and on the other side the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in paint; remote cross on paint; indytya and red cover ” [2] .

In 1788, due to the dilapidation of the monastery buildings, it was abolished, and the temples were used as parish. In 1867, the monastery was restored at the initiative of I.I. In 1875, the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus was surrounded by a fence. In the 1870s, the architect L.V. Dahl took measurements and drew drawings of the temple. In the 1880s, the church was enclosed in a chapel-case, the iconostasis underwent changes, the narthex was dismantled. In 1918, the monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities, and its property was confiscated [2] .

In 1954 A.V. Opoolnikov prepared a project for the restoration of the temple. In 1959, it was disassembled and transported to the Kizhi Museum Reserve. A long stay in the case led to the appearance of a fungus. The rotten boards were replaced, and the narthex was restored according to the drawings of L. V. Dahl [2] .
