Glasgow Cross with Tolbut Spire and Merkat Cross.

The most recognizable landmark of Glasgow Cross is the Tolbut spire, part of the 17th century tolbut , and a copy of the merkat cross , commissioned in 1929 by antiquarian William George Black and designed by architect Edith Hughes [2] [3] . In many of the surrounding Glasgow Cross wholesale and manufacturing warehouses are now located creative sites, galleries and art studios.

Tolbutu was joined by the Hotel Tontin with its assembly halls, designed in 1737 by the architect Allan Dreghorn [4] and with modifications in 1781 by the architect William Hamilton. Tontin was an exchange center for merchants and a place for political and social gatherings. Glasgow Cross with Tolbut and Tontin is depicted in numerous paintings by artists of different centuries [5] [6] . An equestrian statue of King William III , erected in 1734 and currently located on Cathedral Square, was installed in front of Tontin [7] [8] .

The Glasgow cross section, opposite Tontin, was the starting point of regular passenger and postal stagecoaches in Edinburgh and London.

Tolbut Spire

Tolbut Spire

The spire of Tolbut was built in 1626 in the place where the main streets of Glasgow converged at that time. The bell tower is all that remains of the original buildings of Tolbut, which included the town hall, the court and the prison. The City Chambers were located in Tolbut until 1814, when the municipality sold the Tolbut building (later demolished in 1921) and moved to the Prison Square on Soltmarket. The spire height of 38.5 meters, complete with a clockwork, was repaired in 2008 after the discovery of cracks in the structure. Along with the nearby Throne Theater , built in 1794, the Tolbut Spire is one of the oldest buildings in the city.
